Jacob Lunderby and Martha MacLiesh

In Front of Your Eyes, April 2016

Grizzly Grizzly is pleased to announce our April exhibition, ’In Front of Your Eyes” featuring Indiana based artist Martha MacLeish, and Philadelphia artist Jacob Lunderby. “In Font of Your Eyes” brings together two artists who use different modes of making to explore the plasticity of space. For both MacLeish and Lunderby, the landscape is a catalyst to reveal details and surfaces usually passed by. Through pieces that combine digital prints and paint or objects in relief, the works in the show probe the subtle nuances defined within geometric forms and spaces. The title, In Front of Your Eyes, refers to something brazenly bold, yet which remains strangely hidden in plain sight.

Martha MacLeish’s sculptures encompass both particularity and abstraction. She draws inspiration from the physical details of the landscape, aspects of architectural form, and spatial paradoxes in painting and photography. MacLeish states, “My experience of these two qualities exist in separate aspects of my life; one is situated in the granular reality of the everyday, while the other occupies my layman’s notions of infinity, mortality, and consciousness.”

In Jacob Lunderby’s recent work, images of broken windows and bubble wrap are layered over linear optical patterns and transferred into new compositions on wood. The marginal materials and precarious formalism found in his meshwork of image and pattern provide a generative model to engage layers of attention, materiality and durations of time.
